PHILIP COLBERT
Philip Colbert’s work combines existing master artworks from numerous periods with the various icons from the today’s social media.
One can see a method of appropriation there by the imageries of the brands such as Adidas and Coca Cola.
His painting itself is flat; however, because of its mixture of various elements, it consists of a pop-up image to create three dimensional space.
Colbert is described by Andre Leon Talley (a former chief editor of American Vogue) as “The godson of Andy Warhol”.
On the other hand Colbert calls himself as a self-righteous neo-pop surrealist by becoming the Lobster alter ego.
Furthermore he dotes on fried eggs and frequently makes them appear in his paintings.
Since 2017 Colbert started his activity seriously as a painter and achieved his first solo show at Saatch Gallery, London. He opened up a gigantic garage in the suburbs of London to absorb 12 employees working there.
Within a couple of years, starting from his full-scale productions he intensively executed major exhibitions in Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Taipei.
In March 2022, Colbert unveiled his groundbreaking community art project, “The Lobsters”. The project featured a collection of 7,777 unique lobster portraits, each one also serving as a citizenship card within Colbert’s digital metaverse. In this way Colbert’s lobster expanded exponentially.
Merging real-world outcomes with the online community, Colbert also forged a meaningful partnership with several UK-based Hatcheries dedicated to lobster research. Colbert has been actively engaged with his production by not only announcing NFT art but also real art to be exhibited at various museums and galleries including public space.
