Sho+1 is pleased to present “Between Scenes ―Opening the Gate―,” a group exhibition featuring 11 artists from Japan and abroad, held in our newly renovated space from Friday, October 17 to Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Exhibition Overview

A “scene” can be both a segment of a stage or film and a fragment of our daily lives or memories. The title of this exhibition, “Between Scenes ―Opening the Gate―”, highlights the spaces and subtle shifts that lie between these moments.

The exhibition explores the inherent duality of photography—document and performance, truth and fiction, moment and duration—while revealing the tensions and dissonances that emerge between subject and viewer, image and reality. The works are not mere visual fragments; they function as critical devices that invite viewers into a chain of reflective thought.

Bringing together 11 artists with diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds, the exhibition investigates the meanings that reside in the interstices between scenes, where different timelines and contexts intersect.

Exhibition Layout

As suggested by the subtitle “Opening the Gate,” the gallery features two movable walls, allowing visitors to experience the works in a dynamic and interactive way.

Within the space, Nobuyoshi Araki’s retro‐erotic imagery reminiscent of the Showa era overlaps with Naoki Kimura’s serene depictions of calm waters, while Mitsuru Sakurai’s majestic lighthouse landscapes emerge in striking contrast. As a special feature, a short video clip by filmmaker Shigeki Komori will be screened, adding further depth to the space. Additionally, the elegant and delicate works of Italian artists Guido Argentini and Antonio Redaelli—who have been represented since the gallery’s predecessor—are also included, enriching the overall impression of the exhibition.

We warmly invite you to experience this exploration across the boundaries of photography and moving-image expression, discovering the unknown landscapes that unfold between scenes.
