Artist Statement

“Could it be that what reflects us most accurately is, in fact, others?”
It was around the time this question—almost a conviction—began to take shape within me that I naturally found myself photographing lighthouses.
Perhaps I’ve been searching for a steadfast reference point—something I can always return to with certainty.

BP (Base Point) is a body of work that regards lighthouses across Japan as symbolic “base points.”

The origin of lighthouses in Japan can be traced back to “noroshi” —smoke signals by day and bonfires by night—that served as navigational beacons for missions to Tang China. In 1869 (Meiji 2), Japan’s first Western-style lighthouse was built, taking on an essential role in maritime navigation.

Today, with the widespread adoption of GPS technology, many lighthouses have been decommissioned. Among them, only 64 remain in active operation across the country.
This series focuses on those still standing lighthouses—sentinels that continue to watch over the sea.
