Since January 1, 2020, fusengirl carefully draws one face of an imaginary person on a sticky note every day. Her works exhibit layers of delicate touches such as highlights and shadow lines, but at the same time, there is a boldness in how she sometimes paints out the background in a single color, making the whole screen appear vivid. The comparison between such delicacy and boldness creates contrast, resulting in a tightening of the entire screen. While such correlation gives the work a strong impact, it also creates an effect to make the emotion and story stand out more.
Andy Warhol once used a Polaroid camera on a daily basis, preferring to capture moments of his subjects. The process of taking dozens of photographs for a client and selecting the best four was an integral part of his art-production, and an important element in the creation of his works.
The commonality in the creative process between Warhol and fusengirl lies in the sense of constraints of time and space. However, unlike Warhol’s inorganic compositions of portraits, fusengirl’s works contain elements of emotional strength and visual impact.
Additionally, the style of working on a 7.5 cm square sticky note has something in common with Richard Pettibon’s style of appropriating the works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, in which images are developed on a scaled-down format.
fusengirl’s works are always dated along with her signature. On Kawara, a well-known artist in the field of conceptual art, used the date and the daily newspaper as a set in his “Today Series” to make the passage of time and the record itself part of the artwork. fusengirl’s free-minded nature of consciously capturing the flow of time and change by writing the date on a sticky note resonates with some of Kawara’s attempts.
By including the date, fusengirl emphasizes that the work reflects the emotions and events of “the day”, which allows the viewer to feel the “now” moment.
fusengirl’s works, shared by many of her fans through social media, offer not only visual beauty but also provide the viewer with empathy and a new perspective by visually expressing the daily shifts of emotions.
Drawing on her background in Japanese painting, fusengirl explores contemporary endeavors with a Japanese perspective, referencing the spirit of Warhol and pop art.
