Katsuhiko Brian Sato
PROFILE
Katsuhiko Brian Sato began painting self-taught at the age of 25. Sato creates works that cross the boundaries between reality and fiction by freely interweaving images gathered from pop culture, mythology, allegories, and social events. By bringing together motifs from disparate contexts—such as dark-skinned female figures, animals, comic characters, monsters, masks, and spirits—onto a single canvas, he embeds human desires, anxieties, and social contradictions beneath a vivid and approachable surface.
His practice connects with the lineage of contemporary art that engages in the quotation and recontextualization of existing imagery developed since Pop Art, as well as the dismantling of boundaries between high culture and mass culture. Meanwhile, following his personal experience of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake in Sendai, Sato deepened his reflection on the ordinary and the extraordinary, the value of objects, and the interplay between personal and collective memory. This prompted him to expand his artistic realm into three-dimensional and conceptual expressions, often incorporating everyday materials such as blue tarps.
Coexisting humor with disquietude, and reality with fantasy, Sato transforms contemporary society into a distinct visual allegory, having actively presented his work both in Japan and internationally through solo exhibitions and group shows.
